There is just so much going on and that’s coming from a girl who just left her 9 to 5. It’s amazing how many to-do’s we can have just swirling around in our brains constantly reminding us there isn’t enough time in the day to get it all done. If you feel a bit overwhelmed right now then you’ve come to the right place. Here’s what I do to go from overwhelmed to overjoyed: Write it down.
I put whatever is in the front of my mind on paper. It might take 4 pages because I remember I need cucumbers which needs to be added to my shopping list page and then I think of a blog post idea which clearly doesn’t belong with vegetables. It may not be the cutest or most organized list but it’s out of my head and documented so I don’t have to remember it tomorrow. Anyone else suffer from short term memory loss? No. Just me?
I am sorry if you came here looking for the hot new thing to take you to the next level. Let’s call this an oldie but a goodie. I am constantly falling into this trap and thought I may not be the only one. I convince myself that I can manage all the wants, wishes, to-do’s and to-don’ts in my head. No wonder some of us are walking around like pressure cookers ready to blow. For some reason, I rebel against writing things down (says the blogger). Maybe it’s the procrastinator in me or just the mere fact that writing is synonymous with working. I guess I’m just saying that remembering over writing is the lazy man’s game. No shame though. You are not alone as you have me as a companion. But as with all things, we can do better.
I have never finished writing down the endless tasks I have and thought, that was a giant waste of time. Yet, I still need to hype myself up to do it the next time. Writing makes things real, holds you accountable and keeps you honest. Whether it’s a grocery list or a task list, it can be intimidating if you’re struggling financially or running up against a deadline. I get it. Reality can be tough but avoiding it NEVER helps.
As someone who was overwhelmed an hour ago, writing down a plan helped tremendously. I now know what is possible and what I can put to the side for now. I also have hope again and even excitement has returned. All due to placing a few letters on tree bark. Don’t underestimate the power of writing down your thoughts, dreams and to-do’s. Leave room in your head for turning those tasks into accomplishments.
What do you need to get out of your head? Just grab a piece of paper and go at it. If you made a list of any kind after reading this post, please comment and let me know how you felt afterwards. Clear minds make better choices.

Thanks fro the great reminder! TickTick is a great app that I discovered last year – it is ideal for creating notes, to-do lists, setting reminders, etc. It is pretty robust but very easy to use. It is most helpful for me when I randomly think of things that need to get added to my to-do list i.e. adding items to the grocery list, paying a bill, returning a phone call, running an errand, etc. It frees up my mental space for more important things, and makes me feel more present and focused in the moment.
Love this tip, Ally. I will be sure to check it out. Right now I am using paper and google drive.
Thanks for this tip…i too suffer from the “lazy man” syndrome. Forever telling myself I’ll remember until I don’t! 🤭🙄
Ambi, I feel you. Let’s make a pact to do better this month and see how it goes. New habits, here we come!
I love to write! My friends joke that I have way too many journals but it’s like you said, “writing makes things real”. I have 4 separate journals that I keep daily and I would not have it any other way.
Allena, I clearly need to get on your level. Definitely goals!!!
“Writing makes things real, holds you accountable and keeps you honest.” (This needs to be a poster) I was definitely an agenda/planner book girl before there was so much technology. I have 3 journals, gaggles of sticky notes and rely on the basic Notes app in my phone when there is no pen or paper available. Writing it down helps the visual and tactile person in me 🙂
Ooh. Might take you up on that poster…lol. I am quickly realizing that one notebook might not be enough. I use google drive quite a bit so I can access it on my phone but I also really enjoying pen and paper for certain things.
